The Spirit of Law Librarianship Award Committee is pleased to announce that the annual award will now be known as the "Roy M. Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award for Public Service," in honor of it's co-creator and co-founder.  The award, was created in order to give special recognition to individual law librarians engaged in significant acts of charitable work or community or social service.  It was awarded posthumously to him in 2008 at a special reception in Portland during the AALL Annual Meeting.

    Roy exemplified all the virtues intended to be recognized by the award.  Over the years, Roy championed civil rights and worked continuously for intellectual freedom.  He marched in Selma, Alabama and served many roles with local and regional chapters of the ACLU, among many other activities, both public and private.

    The award was established in lieu of accepting royalties from the book, published in 1991 by the Fred B. Rothman Company (now a division of the Wm. S. Hein and Co. Inc.), The Spirit of Law Librarianship. The second edition was published in the spring of 2004 by Alert Publications Inc.
